Refund policy
When you can get your money back, and who from.
Version 4. Wording is never edited once published — a change is a new version at a new address, so the words you agreed to stay readable at the link you agreed to them from.
1. Who sold to you, and who refunds you
Ask Mahaguru is operated by Mahaguru Foundation Australia Pty Ltd, but the Foundation does not sell to you directly. Who sold to you depends on where you bought, and that is who refunds you.
Bought in the iPhone or iPad app: sold by Apple. Apple is the merchant of record and refunds are requested from Apple and decided by Apple, under the policy on Apple's support pages. We are told after a refund has happened. We cannot grant one, refuse one or reverse one.
Bought on our website: sold by Paddle.com Market Ltd as merchant of record and reseller. Refunds are made by Paddle under the refund policy published at paddle.com. This document describes that policy; it does not replace it.
The Android app sells nothing. A plan used on Android was bought on the website or in the iPhone or iPad app, and the rules for that place apply.
If something is broken and that is why you want your money back, write to us first at secretary@mahagurucenter.org. We would rather fix it than have you go through a refund.
2. Your statutory rights
Nothing here limits any right you have under a law that cannot be excluded.
Australia. The consumer guarantees in the Australian Consumer Law apply and cannot be excluded by anything written here. If what you bought is faulty or is not what was described, you are entitled to a remedy regardless of the windows below.
European Economic Area, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Turkey and Israel, for purchases on our website. You have 14 days to withdraw from a purchase. Paddle's checkout asks you to agree to immediate access; doing so gives up that right once you have started using what you bought, which is how the law works for digital content and is stated on the checkout before you pay. For a subscription, the right applies to the first payment. Later renewals are not new purchases with new withdrawal periods: cancel instead, and you keep the plan until the period you have paid for ends.
Elsewhere, for purchases on our website. Shorter statutory periods apply in some countries, currently 7 days in South Korea, Brazil, Canada and China, and 5 days in Singapore.
Purchases through Apple. Your statutory rights are exercised against Apple under Apple's terms for your country.
3. Outside those windows
For website purchases, Paddle may still refund at its discretion if you ask within 14 days of paying. It decides case by case and is not obliged to agree. Beyond that, purchases are not refundable except where the law requires it.
For App Store purchases, Apple decides under its own policy.
4. What a refund does to your questions
A refund takes back whatever the payment added to your account.
Where the payment added a subscription, the plan ends and its remaining allowance goes with it.
Where the payment added questions that do not expire, and you have already used some of them, your balance can go below zero: the questions were answered and the money was returned, and that is the honest record rather than a penalty. You are not charged for it; you simply have nothing to spend until you buy again.
Questions given at sign-up are not affected by a refund of a purchase.
5. Failed answers
If the Service accepts a question and then produces no answer at all, the question is returned to your allowance or balance automatically, where our systems can tell what paid for it. This is a return of the question, not a refund of money. A question that produced an answer is spent even if the answer was poor; use the thumbs down and tell us why.
6. Cancelling a subscription
Cancelling is not a refund. It stops the next payment and you keep the plan until the period you have already paid for runs out.
A subscription bought in the iPhone or iPad app is cancelled in the Settings app on your device, under your Apple Account. Cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period to avoid being charged for the next. We cannot cancel it for you, and no button inside our app can.
A subscription bought on our website is cancelled from your Account screen, which opens the billing portal holding your invoices and card details.
Questions that do not expire are unaffected by cancelling. They stay on your account, and you can still spend them after the plan has ended.
Deleting your account. Deleting your account cancels a subscription bought on our website when the deletion runs, 7 days after you ask. It does not cancel a subscription bought through Apple, because we cannot; cancel that yourself in Settings first, or Apple will keep charging you. A renewal that falls within the 7 days before the deletion runs is still charged.
7. Changes to plans and prices
If we change what your paid plan includes or what it costs, the change never applies to a period you have already paid for. You will be told before it takes effect and may cancel before then without being charged for it. See the Terms of Use, section 9.
8. How to ask
App Store purchases: ask Apple, through your purchase history or reportaproblem.apple.com.
Website purchases: contact Paddle using the details on your receipt, or through the billing portal linked from your Account screen.
You can also write to secretary@mahagurucenter.org and we will help, but the decision and the money are the seller's.
Known gaps
Listed rather than papered over. Each one needs a decision from someone qualified to make it, and a plausible-looking clause nobody wrote on purpose would be worse than the blank.
- To confirm: add Google here if Google Play billing is ever introduced.
- Note for lawyer: whether those guarantees attach to Apple or Paddle as seller, to the Foundation as the party behind the product, or to both, is unsettled and changes what the Foundation must be ready to do.
- To confirm against Paddle's current policy at the time of publication.
- To confirm: for a partial refund through Paddle, the full number of questions the payment added is taken back, not a proportion. Decide whether to keep that or make it proportionate.
